Brigit of Ireland: Icon for Today
A Brigit Study Day and Ritual Ceremony, organised in conjunction with the Centre for Gender and Women’s Studies at Trinity College, was held on 28 January 2023.
The keynote speakers at the Study Day were as follows:
Seamus O Cathain, Professor Emeritus UCD, who spoke on ‘Brigit’s Living Traditions’ — see recording of talk here: O Cathain lecture
Dr. Edel Breathnach, historian, who spoke on ‘Archaeological and Textual Evidence for Brigit’s Family Origins’ — see recording of talk here: Breathnach lecture
Dr Catherine Lawless, art historian and Director of CGWS, who spoke on Brigit in Art History; and Dr Mary Condren, theologian, Director of WSI, who spoke on ‘Brigit’s Material Artefacts’ — see recording of those two talks here: Lawless/Condren lectures
There was also a ‘panel’ event featuring the following speakers: Dolores Whelan (healer, educator), Jenny Beale (creator of Brigit’s Garden), Dr. Rosari Kingston (medical herbalist), Brenda Kindregan (Solas Bhride) and Ruth Marshall (poet, storyteller).
Dr. Noirin Ni Riain provided live music for the day.
A ritual ceremony, coordinated by Lia O’Hegarty, was held in the evening at The Long Room Hub, Trinity College.
